Issues

Carlsbad is a family-friendly, tourist-friendly city that is widely regarded as one of the best places to live and visit in California. All of this has come out of managed growth, citizen input, and a commitment to a clean environment and preservation of our wildlife habitats. It is the duty of the City Council to maintain and enhance everything that makes Carlsbad special. In terms of my candidacy, here is where I stand.

Good Governance

In the area of public safety, I will –

  • Stay focused on the city's mission to protect its citizens.
  • Vote against unwarranted cuts to public safety personnel and equipment.
  • Keep and sustain technology designed to supplement police and fire.
  • Support increased use of volunteers – for example, CERT (Carlsbad Emergency Response Team of which I am a member) -- to supplement police and fire activities.
  • Encourage the integration and implementation of neighborhood watch technology that can help prevent criminal activity and solve crimes.

In the areas of management, budgeting and finance, I will –

  • Stay focused on the city's mission to protect its citizens.
  • Vote against unwarranted cuts to public safety personnel and equipment.
  • Keep and sustain technology designed to supplement police and fire.
  • Support increased use of volunteers – for example, CERT (Carlsbad Emergency Response Team of which I am a member) – to supplement police and fire activities.
  • Encourage the integration and implementation of neighborhood watch technology that can help prevent criminal activity and solve crimes.

In the area of city services, I will –

  • Ensure fast emergency response times.
  • Keep our streets clean and maintained.
  • Improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Ensure a clean and reliable water supply.

In the area of housing and development, I will –

  • Support local control.
  • Provide reasonable and common-sense leadership to ensure a balanced approach to new development.
  • Vote to sustain Carlsbad’s long-time policy to include affordable housing in our residential mix.
  • Ensure that housing for the homeless and for veterans have the support of neighbors.

On the issue of homelessness, I will –

  • Work to help those who want help.
  • Make sure that those who refuse help don’t create public health and safety issues.
  • Help contain the mental-health and drug-dependency issues often associated with the homeless.
  • Support organizations like Solutions for Change, which teaches the homeless the skills and habits they need to escape homelessness permanently.

Economic Strength

The pandemic-related economic shutdown has negatively impacted everyone. To overcome these impacts, I will –

  • Focus on revitalizing business and bringing jobs to Carlsbad.
  • Eliminate government obstacles or hinderances for small businesses to help us get back to full employment.
  • Ensure that City investments are safe and diverse so that they generate equity and income that will be needed in the next two to three years.
  • Review the City budget to identify needed/timely changes in expenditures while maintaining essential services (police and fire).

Environmental Health

We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I think it’s important to keep it that way. As your council member, I will –

  • Fight to ensure our quality of life and healthy environment.
  • Protect our natural and wildlife habitats.
  • Keep and, if possible, expand open space, parks and trails. *
  • Provide high quality recreational and educational opportunities for families.
  • Ensure easy beach access and parking for bicyclists and pedestrians.
* I am on the record in support of a park in Ponto, and I look forward to championing a feasibility study to help make the park a reality.
